“I’m looking for a utopia out there on the sea somewhere that will become a new home to someone.”

Late 1500s A.D.

The leader of Hwalbindang, a band of righteous outlaws in Joseon, Hong Gildong, surrenders himself to the Joseon court after achieving his goal of taking revenge on corrupt officials. Then he obtains a big and sturdy ship under the excuse of leaving Joseon.

However, Gildong’s true purpose is finding a utopia called Yuldo that he learned from his teacher, Jeon Woochi. He asks the other members of Hwalbindang to join him on his journey, but nobody follows him because Gildong’s journey seems pointless.

Gildong is disheartened by his comrades’ lack of enthusiasm. However, Yi Mongryong, a scholar who failed the state examination, joins Gildong to see the world. On top of this, Gildong successfully persuades the infamous thief, Im Kkeokjeong, to join his crew, and starts a new journey to find Yuldo.

Where could Yuldo, the utopia that Gildong is looking for, be? Also, what kinds of mysteries could lie in Yuldo?
